Sacraments

Sacraments at Midtown Catholic

They are the channels of the living water of God’s grace.

Baptism

The origin and foundation of Christian Baptism is Jesus. Before starting his public ministry, Jesus submitted himself to the baptism given by John the Baptist. The waters did not purify him; he cleansed the waters.

1st Communion

Jesus gives himself to us in the Eucharist as spiritual nourishment because he loves us. By eating the Body and drinking the Blood of Christ in the Eucharist, we become united to the person of Christ through his humanity.

1st Reconciliation

Jesus entrusted the ministry of reconciliation to the Church. The Sacrament of Penance is God’s gift to us so that any sin committed after Baptism can be forgiven. In confession we have the opportunity to repent and recover the grace of friendship with God.

ADULT RECONCILIATION

First Reconciliation takes place as part of First Communion preparation, so your child needs to be signed up for a First Communion preparation class. Please see the First Communion section on this webpage for more details. This either takes place in one of the Catholic schools or Wednesday night Family Formation program. Confirmation

The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus on the occasion of his baptism by John. Jesus’ entire mission occurred in communion with the Spirit. Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world.

ADULT CONFIRMATION

1. Your child needs to be signed up for a Confirmation preparation class. This either takes place in one of the Catholic schools or Wednesday night Family Formation program. This is a two year process, with Confirmation taking place at the end of Year 2. Confirmation preparation typically takes place in 7th and 8th grades, but we do receive older students as well. If your child is older than this, please contact Coordinator of Religious Education, Rachel Bielstein.

2. For Year 1 of Confirmation preparation (typically 7th grade), all you will need to do is be registered for the Confirmation class in the school or in Family Formation. Year 1 serves as the initial year for confirmation candidates to explore their decision to be confirmed in the classroom setting.

During Year 2, we ask the candidates to further their commitment to this decision through participation in additional activities such as retreats, service, selection of a sponsor, and more. See Steps 3, 4 and 5 for more details.

3. At the beginning of Year 2 of Confirmation prep (typically 8th grade), we will ask all Confirmation Candidates and their parents to attend a Confirmation Info meeting. During this meeting, parents and candidates will receive a handbook. Please read it carefully, and then complete the Confirmation information form in the back of the handbook.

4. Pay the Confirmation Materials fee of $10. You can turn it in with your information form or pay online at the Midtown Catholic Website.

5. Continue participation in classes, and attend scheduled retreats, rehearsals, and Sacrament events throughout Year 2! Make sure to reference the checklist in your handbook for deadlines on some of the service, saint selection, and sponsor activity requirements.

Marriage

Scripture often refers to marriage, its origin and purpose, the meaning God gave to it, and its renewal in the covenant made by Jesus with his Church. Man and woman were created for each other.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION

Holy Orders

From the moment of Jesus’ conception in the womb of Mary until his Resurrection, he was filled with the Holy Spirit. In biblical language, he was anointed by the Holy Spirit and thus established by God the Father as our high priest. As Risen Lord, he remains our high priest. . . . While all the baptized share in Christ’s priesthood, the ministerial priesthood shares this through the Sacrament of Holy Orders in a special way.
